  • Well this project isn’t working for me.

One last self portrait with the text "I guess I got tired of self-portraits. Time to figure out something I actually want to do."

    I just realized that:

    1. I forgot to draw self-portraits for the last few days, and
    2. I didn’t miss drawing them.

And since literally no one but me ever looks at these, I’m going to go ahead and call this project done.

What will I do next? Only I will know (because I’m the only one who ever looks at this).

  • Scratchy

No reference photo this time, which is probably why I’ve returned to having a Megamind head.

Another goofy self portrait, with notes about my giant head and search for a Photoshop brush I like.

  • Double Header

I forgot to draw a self portrait yesterday – I was too busy watching four mostly terrible movies – so I’m posting two today. I spent hours on these.

Two very simple sketches of myself. Big heads and tiny stick figure bodies.
Fun fact: I drew the eyebrows with a custom Photoshop brush I made a while ago but couldn’t figure out a use for.
  • Guided

I tried two tricks. I used one of them- turning the picture upside down- for the last picture. This time I added an 8×6 grid to give me 48 squares to keep me on track. Much less stretchy. I guess it’s better than tracing.

    Profile self portrait.

The main thing I learned: I have hairy ears.

Now I need to figure out how to do it right side up without the grid.

  • Almost but, not quite, entirely unlike me

Black and white self portrait dated 26/6/18

It definitely looks like… someone. Not me, but someone.

I should do that “flip a picture upside down and do it a tiny bit at a time” thing.

  • Self(ie)-indulgent project

So, I’m a guy who needs a project. I started one at the beginning of the year – The Thursday Morning Movie – but the work to personal satisfaction ratio is poor. I’ll finish the year as planned, but I don’t think it will continue beyond that.

So, I need a new thing that feels more creative and less job-like. The plan: self-portraits. I’m going to shoot for one a day. I like drawing myself because 1) I’m always around when I need me and 2) I won’t offend anyone if they look like crap.

And a lot of them are going to look like crap. I have no formal art training, and I haven’t done any regular drawing for at least a decade.

So with that in mind, please enjoy what I’m calling “Gotta Start Somewhere.”

A black and white line drawing of my head.

Tiny head! Anime eyes! Glasses like Brains from Thunderbirds!

Brains from Thunderbirds. All smart people wear glasses.

Bonus: If I actually remember to post these when I make them, this blog won’t be comatose! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • Botober drawing dump: Days 24-31

I really struggled to stay motivated to finish this project, so the drawings are even worse than usual, but they are DONE. There’s at least one idea in here that I thought was funny.

I’m glad I did this, but I think I’ll skip it next year.

    Botober drawing, Day 24: Leanwhile

Batman leans against nothing. Text reads "LEANWHILE, at the Hall of Justice... Whay am I able to lean against a wall that doesn't exist? BECAUSE I'M BATMAN."
Botober drawing, Day 25: six slices soup

A man dressed like someone from the TV show The Prisoner is slicing soup on a table. He is saying "I am not a chef. I am a free man. Also, the trick is to freeze the soup before you cut it."
Botober drawing, Day 26: pepper towels

A bell pepper with arms in a bathroom toweling itself.

Test reads "...and I thought yesterday's drawing was dumb."
Botober drawing, Day 26: 1 cup sliced dish

A man at a table with a dish split in half and a cup in front of him. The man is saying "I sliced it all by myself with my giant misshapen hand that was drawn that way on purpose and not because SOMEONE can't draw hands."
The cup is saying "LIAR! THE SLICING WAS MINE! But the hands thing is totally true"
Botober drawing, Day 28: 1 teaspoon flup

A drawing of Flappy Bird with its tail extended so it looks like a spoon. Text underneath says "Fluppy Birdspoon"
Botober drawing, Day 29: small calling cheese

two hands, one hold a card, the other holding a tiny piece of cheese.

Text above reads:
"My calling card."
"My calling cheese."
"Seems a bit small."
Botober drawing, Day 30: Add blender. Shell

The blender logo with part of the outside "shell" removed. Text at the bottom says "I'm so tired."
Botober drawing, Day 31: Orenge gelatin hourse

An orange drawing of a horse's head. Large text surrounding the head says BOTOBER DAY 31 ORENGE GELATIN HOURSE. Smaller text in the bottom right corner says DONE.

  • Botober Day 23: rub the bog

Line drawing. A man on his hands and knees is rubbing a marsh while a woman stands watching. He is saying "Like this?" and she is responding "Uh... sure."

Text at the bottom reads "Tina actually asked for a back rub, but this was working for her."

Labels at the bottom read "BOTOBER 25" and "23: RUB THE BOG."

Did I almost go with toilet paper? Maybe.

  • Botober day 22: Spoonfur pie. Also, previous days I forgot to post.

    Here’s spoonfur pie:

Line drawing. A man wearing a trucker cap with " I ❤️ π" written on it sits at a table. his hand rests on the table holding a spoon. There is a pie in front of him. He is saying "This is my spoon fur pie. I don't trust forks." Labels written at the bottom read "Botober 25" and "22: Spoonfur pie"

And some that I did on time but never put here for some reason:

    Day 15: Bear Spice

Line drawing. A slightly more realistic than usual Yogi bear stands with his arms outstrectched next to a table with a picnic basket and some spice jars. He is saying "Why is everything covered in this pic a nic basket covered in cumin? And did they dredge the fried chicken in cinnamon? Zero stars." Below that is the text: The real Yogi Bear was a fussy eater. He couldn't... BEAR SPICE. YEEAAAAH! Labels written at the bottom read "Botober 25" and "15: Bear Spice"

    Day 19: Grated Pan

Pan stares angrily at his television. Text from the TV is a conversation between Apollo and an interviewer: We're here with Apollo, often considered to be the best Greek god. Who would you say is the worst Greek god? Probably Pan. Oh yeah, he suck! HA HA HA HA Labels at the bottom read "Botober 25" and "19" Grated Pan"

…and maybe my favorite of these:

    Day 20: 1 smorbs

Line drawing of a smurf with a Morbius face saying "It's smorbin' time." Labels on the bottom read "Botober 25" and "20: 1 smorbs"

    Nine to go!
